Winter Quarters Nebraska Temple Pictures
Rising on a hill in Florence, a district of Omaha, adjacent to a Church-owned pioneer cemetery, the Winter Quarters Temple stands on some of the most sacred ground in Latter-day Saint history — the site where more than 2,000 Saints died from sickness, exposure, and hunger during the harsh winters of 1846–47 and 1847–48 as they prepared to cross the plains to the Salt Lake Valley. One of only three temples built on ground of profound historical significance to the early Church, alongside the Palmyra New York Temple and the Nauvoo Illinois Temple, it was dedicated by President Gordon B. About the Winter Quarters Nebraska Temple
Winter Quarters was where the Latter-day Saints settled after being driven from Nauvoo, Illinois, and where thousands more, including many European converts, encamped before continuing their journey west to the Salt Lake Valley. More than 2,000 Church members died there during the winters of 1846–47 and 1847–48 from scurvy, malaria, harsh storms, and inadequate food and shelter, and many of them rest today in the cemetery adjacent to the temple grounds. President Gordon B. Hinckley announced a temple for Omaha on June 14, 1999, and Elder Hugh W. Pinnock of the Seventy presided over the groundbreaking on November 28, 1999, at the temple site beside the historic pioneer cemetery and near the Mormon Trail Center, which Hinckley had dedicated in 1997.
Finished in Bethel white granite, the temple was built as a lasting memorial to the pioneers who once camped on this same ground. As the community of Florence prepared for the public open house, members and neighbors worked side by side creating handcrafted flowers for storefronts and decorating historic sites and markers with balloons; one Lutheran neighbor later wrote that the temple was "a beautiful building and a welcome addition to the neighborhood." More than 61,000 visitors toured the temple during the open house, held March 30 through April 14, 2001. President Hinckley dedicated the Winter Quarters Nebraska Temple in four sessions on April 22, 2001 — a date holding deep significance, coming 154 years and eight days after Brigham Young and the first company of pioneers departed Winter Quarters on April 14, 1847, to continue their trek to the Rocky Mountains. The dedication was broadcast over the Church's encrypted satellite system to stake centers throughout North America, and the temple now serves members across Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, and Kansas.
